Orthongathic Surgery
These are typically done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in a hospital setting. Incisions are made in the mouth and cheeks so that there are no scars in the face. The jaws are then "set" to the correct position to straighten the jaws. Common cosmetic problems such as retrusive lower jaw (small chin) or protrusive lower jaw (long jaw) can be corrected.
Conversly, protrusive upper jaw (buck teeth) or retrusive upper jaw can be rectified. These cases usually need braces as well to correct and stabilize the bite. Hence it is a team approach involving the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the orthodontist.
